Researching German Roots from Abroad
The Research Set — A Clear Path to Your Origins — gives that search a structure: a family‑tree template, a step‑by‑step research checklist, ready‑to‑use letter templates in German with an English translation alongside each one, a glossary of German record‑keeping terms, and notes on the origins of German surnames. It is designed for researching German family history from abroad, including communication with German offices and archives, record types with no direct English equivalent, and the questions that arise once the obvious starting points have been exhausted.
Behind the Research
A German‑American Perspective
My long‑standing interest in family history is also rooted in personal experience. Over the years, my own research has taken me through archives, historical records and different authorities. These experiences inform the products I create for Wurzeln & Wege.
That perspective shaped The Research Set. Each section is built on careful research and reliable sources. My familiarity with the German language and administrative structures helps turn that information into a clear path for research from another country.
Approach
The Approach Behind Wurzeln Wege
Everyone thinks, plans and works in their own way. What feels helpful in everyday life can look very different from one person to another. Wurzeln Wege is built around that understanding.
This is why I create products for different areas of life and for different needs. Some offer a quick and accessible starting point, while others explore a subject in greater depth. Alongside more traditional formats, there are also materials designed specifically to be accessible and useful for neurodivergent people.
Many different paths can stand side by side. A product should offer orientation, make connections easier to understand and leave enough room for people to find their own way of using it.
Design is an essential part of this approach. Something that works well can look beautiful too, and a beautifully designed product can be just as capable. Bringing the two together is an important part of Wurzeln Wege.
This allows very different products to develop over time while still sharing the same underlying philosophy.
About
About Wurzeln Wege
My professional experience in graphic design spans more than twenty‑five years — most recently as a Creative Director, before that as an Art Director, for German and international brands, including the luxury segment. That background shapes the products as much as the research itself. Dense information, unfamiliar terminology and generations of names are organized into a format that is clear, considered and easy to return to.
Through Wurzeln & Wege, I create and offer my own print products and digital templates. Wurzeln Wege helps you research more confidently and systematically – it does not research on your behalf. I therefore don't offer commissioned or individual genealogy research.
